There are the good, the better, the best and the greatest. What defines greatness? Is it talent, consistency, hard work, perseverance, integrity or is it a blend of all of them? I do not think I am capable of answering that but is it not what we want to do in life as well. Have all those qualities, be that great person. Sport also inspires a obvious level discipline, when it's a team we have to function as a team and if it's an private then custom and training is a must. A few men inspire a generation, and many of them break boundaries and norms, same with sports and sportspersons.
Football for instance makes the poorest of poor African Nations forget that the civil war, the political unrest, the problems that plague the nation and unites the population in supporting their football heroes. Even in India when the Indian cricket team is playing well all of us seem to be a minute content and there is a degree of delight that at least the team is doing well. We mistake it for the nation is doing well, maybe it is? I for one am all the time happy India is winning (cannot help the feeling is in my blood).
Sport Soccer
The year 1978, the place Argentina, the opening Football World Cup. Argentina and just been through a coup and was under a military regime, in political turmoil. Now not the best time to be wondering whether our team is doing well or not but a team, a game, united the Argentineans in retain of their nation. Not a surprise that Mario Kempes led them to a world cup victory and the nation erupted with joy. You do not expect that of population who had their possession revoked, but it happened.
There are champions and sometimes you have a feeling about them, when they do not perform there is huge dissatisfaction but somewhere we know that they are down but not out. This I saw in the 1998 World Cup at France where Brazil had Ronaldo and he was their top scorer and the best striker in the world but he failed in the crucial finals. Everybody wrote Ronaldo off, he did not perform even at the club level. He came back in 2002 as the washed up previous great. This time he won the golden boot and led Brazil to victory, he never gave up. No wonder they call Football the beautiful game. The excitement, joy, dissatisfaction is all part of the game and part of life itself.
