A Brief History of the Soccer Ball

Amidst the evolution of the game, the soccer ball has gone through many developments. Years before the Zidanes and Maradonas we cherish, people enjoyed kicking things that ranged from elasticized balls by South American Indians, human heads or skulls in medieval times, cow bladders or just stitched-up cloth a bit later on.

Prior to the manufacturing of rubber, these 'so-called' balls would sometimes depend on the size and shape of the objects used, making the 'roll' of the ball so unpredictable until leather provided better shape retention.
After the Ancient Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all gave ball design a try, the smooth and soft balls we worship today became somewhat standardized during the 19th century with the introduction of patented rubber and Charles Goodyear's 1855 soccer ball. This famed ball was designed like a modern-day basketball and its likes were in fact used by James Naismith when he was developing his game of basketball.

Inflatable balls were then introduced after FIFA's inception. The organization agreed that the ball must be spherical with a circumference of 27 to 28 inches - a rule still applied today. The first balls were excellent for kicking but painful when heading due to the heavy stitching and the water absorption characteristics of the leather. This was an issue until well into the century.

Luckily today, advancements in ball manufacturing have minimized if not eradicated pain caused by those heavy balls. With synthetic paints to coat the leathers, water absorption has been improved and laces were eliminated guaranteeing exceptional ball control and mind-boggling talent.
